JAMES TIDWELL Specializing in Mohs Micrographic Surgery to treat skin cancer Dr. James Tidwell grew up in Paducah and attended St. Mary High School, where he graduated at the top of his class as valedictorian. He went on to attend the University of Kentucky, graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. After college, he worked at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion as a systems engineer. Given the wind down of the plant production, he changed careers and went to medical school at the University of Tennessee graduating with the faculty medal for highest academic standing in his class. Dr. Tidwell went on to complete his dermatology residency at the University of Louisvill After residency, he continued his medical education at the renowned Scripps Clinic near San Diego, California. There he completed a fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology under Dr. Hugh Greenway, a surgeon who learned Mohs surgery from Dr. Mohs himself. This fellowship included training in venous and lymphatic surgery, cosmetic procedures, and laser surgery Mohs micrographic surgery was developed by Dr. Fred Mohs at the University of Wisconsin. It involves surgically removing skin cancer in minimally invasive layers and examining the tissue under a microscope until healthy, cancer-free tissue is completely reached in all directions. Because Mohs surgeons are trained in cutaneous oncology and pathology, Mohs surgery has the highest success rate of all treatments for skin cancers-approximately 99%. This technique ensures complete cancer removal during surgery, minimized amount of healthy tissue lost, and is able to maximize the functional and cosmetic outcome resulting from surgery.
